Dr. Rhett Layman on Live at 9: Discussing Pelvic Venous Disease Treatment
Memphis Vascular Center’s own Dr. Rhett Layman recently appeared on Live at 9 to discuss pelvic venous disease treatment (PVD)—also known as pelvic congestion syndrome—and the minimally invasive treatments available to help women find lasting relief.
Pelvic venous disease is a common but often overlooked cause of chronic pelvic pain. It occurs when faulty valves or blockages in the pelvic veins cause blood to pool, leading to enlarged veins and symptoms such as pelvic pressure, heaviness, and pain that may worsen with standing or during menstruation. It can also be associated with vulvar and leg varicose veins. Studies suggest PVD affects up to 15% of women ages 20–50 and may contribute to as many as 30–45% of chronic pelvic pain cases—yet it frequently goes undiagnosed because symptoms can mimic gynecologic, gastrointestinal, or musculoskeletal conditions.
During the interview, Dr. Layman explained how advanced diagnostic imaging helps identify pelvic venous disease and how ovarian vein embolization (OVE) offers a modern, non-surgical solution. This minimally invasive procedure uses image guidance to treat the affected veins from the inside, reducing pressure and relieving pain—without general anesthesia, hospitalization, or a lengthy recovery. Patients are treated on an outpatient basis right here at Memphis Vascular Center, allowing them to return home the same day.
If you or someone you love has been struggling with chronic pelvic pain without clear answers, this segment provides valuable insight into a condition that is both real and treatable.
